Spinal manipulation therapy for chronic low back pain results in better long-term outcome
This study showed that spinal manipulation therapy (SMT) is effective for long-term low back pain (LBP) after an initial phase of treatments (during a “maintenance” phase of care).
Patients who received SMT experienced significantly lower pain and disability scores than than those who did not receive any SMT. However, only the group that was given SMT during the follow-up period (after the initial phase) showed more improvement in pain and disability scores at the 10-month evaluation. In the non-maintained SMT group, however, the mean pain and disability scores returned back near to their pre treatment level.
SMT is the staple of Chiropractic and it’s what separates the Chiropractic profession from many other professions. “Maintenance care” is an option that many of our patients at Green Door Chiropractic continue with and they too notice many of the results as outlined in this study.
